Auckland iwi assert property right
Auckland iwi hope a meeting on Sunday with Housing Minister Nick Smith will clarify what role they could play in developing on surplus crown land in the super city.
Ngati Whatua Orakei and Waikato-Tainui have expressed concern at what they see is an attempt by Mr Smith to circumvent the right of first refusal mechanism within Treaty of Waitangi settlements so he can sell the land to developers.
Tamaki Collective chair Paul Majurey says the right in Auckland is held collectively by the 13 mana whenua hapu and iwi.
Paul Majurey says the iwi are determined to make the crown stick with the processes it has agreed.
