Little backing tough questions
The Labour Party is considering what it might do in Government to foster outlets for news and current affairs.
TV3’s axing of Campbell Live and allegations of management interference over coverage of stories at Maori Television has rekindled questions about how changes in the media landscape are affecting journalism.
Leader Andrew Little says there seems to be a widespread downgrading of news and current affairs in New Zealand, particularly on television.
"We’re keen to see something else put in place so that discipline is still there. It’s very important for a democracy that we do have good news and current affairs and that those in public office and those in positions of power are called to account, so we are working through the detail of that but we are very keen to see something come of it,"he says.
Andrew Little says Native Affairs has covered some important stories, and it is important Maori Television continues its work in the area.
