Last day for Relationships Aotearoa
An organisation that started by helping servicemen coming back from World War II deal with their troubled relationships will close its doors for good today.
Relationships Aotearoa has fallen victim to changes in government policies that saw it lose funding.
Chief executive Jacqui Akuhata-Brown says in its original form as Marriage Guidance it provided the only training in couple counselling available in New Zealand.
It become the country’s largest counselling agency delivering couple counselling, support for both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, wraparound therapeutic interventions for individuals, couples and families, and a Maori for Maori whanau service – Whakapakari Whanau.
She says the sector now needs to get behind Stand, Lifeline and the other providers who take on its work.
Ms Akuhata-Brown says the last few weeks have been exceedingly difficult for staff as they tried to support clients through an extremely short transition.
