Housing blame sheeted home
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall is putting the blame for the poor state of many state houses squarely on the present Government.
A coroner last week linked the death of Otara two-year-old Emma-Lita Bourne to the condition of the Housing New Zealand property she was living in.
Ms Wall says the Government’s social housing reforms aren’t providing any extra houses, and the existing stock has been allowed to run down.
She says a third of the corporation’s stock is still to be insulated.
"I would have thought it a priority now after 7 years in government so could have guaranteed that at minimum all of the state houses, the 68000 of them would have been insulated," she says.
Louisa Wall says deferred maintenance means most social housing agencies can’t afford to buy state houses for the amount the government wants to charge.
