Harawira backing Maori alliance bid
Mana leader Hone Harawira is endorsing a bid by grassroots activists in Auckland to get an alliance with the Maori Party.
Maori Party leaders have so far distanced themselves from the idea, which will be discussed further at a hui at Manurewa Marae on June 20.
Mr Harawira says it came up at Mana's annual general meeting at Whakapara Marae over the weekend.
He told Radio Waatea host Willie Jackson it is consistent with the efforts he made while still an MP to talk to his former colleagues, which were rebuffed at the time.
"My door is always open for it and I am more than happy to step down from the leadership. I don't crave leadership. I crave unity," Mr Harawira says.
He says the Mana AGM showed the movement is still in good heart, with activists getting involved in a wide range of innovate projects and protests around the country.
