Lobster on the menu

Aotearoa Fisheries is teaming up with Port Nicholson Fisheries and Aotearoa Fisheries Ltd to form the country’s largest Maori-owned lobster processing business.
The business, which will start on April 1 next year, will process 650 tonnes of lobster quota, accounting for about 44 percent of the North Island and Chathams TACC and 23 percent of New Zealand’s total live lobster exports.
Port Nicholson Fisheries chair Dion Tuuta says the collaboration has been four years in the making,
It grew from the Maori Economic Development Taskforce’s Koura Inc project in 2011 which tried to find ways for Maori lobster quota owners to work together through the lobster value chain.
He says the companies have a common shareholder base, aligned values and a shared vision for the future.
