Hakari launches Matariki
More than 100 Matariki events around Auckland are being unveiled today at what’s being called the Long Hakari.
Chefs Tu Fearn and Nancye Pirini have prepared a special three course meal of Maori-inspired kai for invited guests at Auckland Museum.
Auckland Council’s Matariki co-ordinator Anahera Higgins says the festival starts on June 20 with a dawn karakia on Maungakiekie to welcome the star cluster.
For the next month there will be plenty to see and do.
"There are the signature events that the Auckland Council produces itself and those events are the Manu Aute Kite day, the Kapa Haka Super 12, Matariki on the Move and Wananga a Kai. Then there are the amazing events that all of our individual producers bring to this programme with all their hard work all their amazing creativity and they put these events on for us from the community up" she Anahera Higgins.
