Claim lodged against Statoil drilling
Opponents of oil exploration in the far north have filed a claim with the Waitangi Tribunal saying that the government should have sought the consent of affected iwi before issuing deep sea oil drilling permits.
The claim was lodged by Te Ahipara Komiti Takutaimoana, a marae-based group managing all fisheries issues for Te Rarawa.
Komiti member Sonny Otene is with a delegation in Norway that this week addressed Statoil’s annual meeting about its opposition to the company’s activities.
Chair Patau Tepania says the iwi wants Statoil to surrender its permits and go home.
He says the opposition is based not just on concern about any damage to the marine environment but because of the impact of fossil fuels on climate change.
