Flames can’t quench iwi radio pioneer
Tautoko FM hopes to be back on air by the end of the day after a fire destroyed its Mangamuka Bridge studio.
Manager Cyril Chapman says it's fitting out a caravan to resume broadcasts.
The fire started in the early evening, after everyone had gone home for the night.
Mr Chapman says by the time he arrive back at the station about 6.30pm, the back end of the building was well ablaze.
"We live in the wops and our access to fire brigades is something that's a reality of living here. By the time the fire brigade got here it was way beyond putting the fire out. It's completely gutted, the whole building is completely gutted," he says.
Cyril Chapman says fortunately the station's archives were stored off site, but many taonga collected over the years went up in the blaze.
