Centre to celebrate settlement
Waikato River iwi Ngati Koroki Kahukura, and Te Arawa are planning a river centre to mark their treaty settlements.
Advisor Willie Te Aho says three potential sites in the are of Lake Karapiro have been identified for the building, which has been designed by architect Rau Hoskins.
He says it will acknowledge the contributions of the late Te Oreore Wally Papa and Rawiri Te Whare in securing their respective treaty settlements.
It will tell the stories of the tribes and the river.
"It tells the story of our connection with hydro and tells about our cultural icons as well in terms of our waka culture our eeling culture and all of that. So people can actually come on the river trail and actually come and actually see not only the history but the living history of Ngati Koroki Kahukura, Ngati Haua and our connections to Te Arawa as well," he says.
Willie Te Aho says the trust to oversee and fund the project will be formed in the next few weeks, and it will then seek and agreement on the project with Waipa District Council.
