Looks, looks, looks in Maori housing equation
The more Maori you look, the less likely you are to own your own whare.
That’s the conclusion of a study by Auckland University researchers as part of the New Zealand Attitudes and Values Survey.
Carla Houkamau from the Business School and Chris Sibley from the School of Psychology asked the 561 Maori participants in the survey how Maori they thought they looked and whether or not they owned their own home.
Dr Houkamau says even after taking into account other demographic variables like education, region, age, income and relationship status, appearance made a big difference.
She says that may point to an extremely important form of institutional racism.
