Roger Maaka EIT’s first emeritus professor
The Eastern Institute of Technology has appointed Dr Roger Maaka its first emeritus professor.
Professor Maaka, of Ngati Kahungunu, joined the institute in 2009 as dean of its Te Uranga Waka faculty of Maori studies.
He entered academia after a 20-year career in the New Zealand Army which included tours of duty in Borneo, South Vietnam and Singapore.
His thesis for a PhD in political science was on the tribe in 20th century Maori society, and he went on to head the Maori studies department at the University of Canterbury before moving to Canada in 2003 to head the Native Studies department at the University of Saskatchewan.
Professor Maaka also served on the Waitangi Tribunal from 1996 to 2011.
EIT chief executive Chris Collins his academic excellence was well-recognised by his peers and he continued to be active within his field of research in local, national and international forums.
To mark his appointment, in July Professor Maaka will deliver a public lecture on the consequences of Treaty settlements for Maori.
