Late bid to stop settlement
A South Taranaki hapu has asked the High Court to review the Waitangi Tribunal’s refusal to grant it an urgent hearing.
Araukuku lodged a claim in 1995 relating to land confiscated by the Crown in 1865, including the whenua under Stratford Power Station.
The claim was partially settled under the Ngati Ruanui claim, but the hapu is concerned its rights will be adversely affected by the impending Ngauahine settlement.
It told the tribunal it had been excluded from settlement body Nga Hapu of Ngaruahine Iwi Incorporated.
In its written decision, tribunal member Sir Doug Kidd said he was concerned the hapu only raised its concerns in February, despite the mandating process starting in 2010, and any delay to the settlement would be unfair on Ngaruahine.
Justice Joe Williams will hear the application on Monday.
