Fox keen on surveillance overhaul
Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox hopes a review of the security laws and agencies will lead to greater honesty and transparency.
Former deputy prime minister Sir Michael Cullen and lawyer Dame Particia Reddy have been appointed to conduct the review.
Ms Fox says Maori want to know that the extraordinary powers of the security agencies and police surveillance aren't used unfairly against them.
The 2007 Tuhoe raids are an example of how surveillance powers can be abused.
"You know when our justice system is so flawed with institutionalised racism that we can't even call it institutionalised racism, we call it structural discrimination, then we cannot be assured that the extraordinary powers that the police have, that our security agencies have in to surveillance our people, on our soil, in our own homes, will not be abused," Ms Fox says.
She says after the security review, there needs to be a review of the justice system.
