Top students acknowledged by PM
Last year’s top secondary school scholars have been acknowledged at a ceremony in parliament.
The Prime Minister’s Award for Academic Excellence went to former Westlake Boys’ High School student Joshua Hansen, who received seven New Zealand Scholarships, including five Outstanding Scholarships and a Top Subject award.
Education Minister Hekia Parata says she was pleased to see some Maori among the 10 Premier and 35 Top Subject Scholar Awards.
They included Parekura Tautuhi Pewhairangi from Te Aute College in the te reo rangatira section, Manihera Te Hei from Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Rito in te reo Maori, and Kahu Kutia from Trident High School in photography.
"Coming on the heels of the Ngarimu Scholarships for the tertiary end, I think we've got some really exciting young people ahead of us but in celebrating them we need to make sure we are lifting all students all Maori students to do their very best and to be successful," Ms Parata says.
