Scholarship honours inspiring lawyer

An inspirational Maori lawyer is being remembered with a new scholarship being given this week at the conclusion of Otago University’s biennial year’s Hui Poutama Maori research symposium.
Jolene Patuawa-Tuilave of Ngati Whatua played a prominent role in the university while a student and was making her mark as a lawyer when she died of cancer at the age of 33.
Otago law faculty Associate Professor Jacinta Ruru says her iwi and the university have got together to offer the new scholarship that recognised her leadership abilities.
The Jolene Patuawa-Tuilave Maori Leadership in Law Scholarship will be awarded on Friday to Adam Tapsell, who is studying both law and Maori studies.
The two day Hui Poutama will include 18 presentations on innovative research focused on the health, cultural, educational, environmental and economic wellbeing of Maori.
