A pan-iwi company could soon be operating out of the Middle East thanks to a new relationship with a Dubai humanitarian organisation.
Prepared Foods, a subsidiary of Aotearoa Fisheries Ltd, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Awqaf and Minor Affairs Foundation around the supply of ready to eat halal meal packs for emergencies and disaster relief.
Business development manager Craig Orr says the Dubai government has established a large logistics centre it is calling the international humanitarian centre, taking advantage of the fact a third of the world’s population is within a three hour range.
He says the pouches are produced at the company’s new Palmerston North factory, but as the project expands other facilities may be needed to meet the target of one million meals.
"With the resources that the Dubai government have. We are looking at investing in future products and capability. We will potentially look at doing it here simply because the nature of them (Dubai) being in the center of the world" he says.
Craig Orr says Prepared Foods was already supplying halal-certified packs for clients like the Australian Defence Force.
