Maori values impress Dubai partner in food aid deal
The head of Aotearoa Fisheries’ subsidiary Prepared Foods says being Maori-owned was critical to becoming a key supplier for an international aid programme based out of the United Arab Emirates.
The companies this week signed a memorandum of understanding with the Dubai government’s Awqaf and Minors’ Affairs Foundation, which is running the Salma project to source ready to eat halal protein meals for emergency humanitarian relief.
Craig Orr says the project builds on the facilities the company has built to supply pouched rations for military forces.
He says while New Zealand’s reputation as a food producer helped the deal, the pan-Maori company’s multi-generational business focus added something extra to the relationship.
"Without that relationship and the understanding of how all the profits and dividends that revolve around and end up benefitting future generations, we probably would not have been able to get to where we are today, so we have relied quite a bit on that endowment relationship," Mr Orr says.
He says the relationship could lead to Prepared Foods developing a production facility in Dubai.
