Collective action needed on Taumarere clean-up
Northland iwi Ngati Manu wants to set up an accord to clean up the Taumarere River, which flows into the Bay of Islands at Opua.
It is meeting today with council subsidiary Far North Holdings Ltd to discuss the way forward.
Arapeta Hamilton from environmental arm Te Kahui Kaitiaki o Ngati Manu mo te Awa Tapu o Taumarere says it’s got so bad that mokopuna swimming in the river over the summer got boils and rashes.
He says a wide range of groups need to come together because the problem of pollution has no single source.
"Discharges into the awa, septic tanks, farming, forestry, business, you name it, it's all going in to the Taumarere River," Mr Hamilton says.
He’s heartened by the interest and commitment of the tribe’s young people in helping with the clean up.
