Rotorua’s Ngati Tarawhai Iwi Trust has opened a childcare centre.
Puawai Early Centre manager Angela Tunui says when the Education Ministry tendered a contract to address the high percentage of young children not engaging in early childhood education in the Owhata area, the iwi put its hand up.
Sixteen children have enrolled so far.
The centre is bilingual te reo Maori and English.
