Chiefs not Cook call for Kaiti memorials

There’s a call for greater recognition of Maori tipuna on Gisborne’s Titirangi/Kaiti Hill.
The hill is set for redevelopment once its pine trees are harvested.
A group from Te Wananga o Aotearoa told a Gisborne District Council long-term plan consultation meeting that there were monuments in the city to Captain Cook but none of Maia, the rangitira of Puhi Kaiti, or Kiwa and Paoa from the Horouta canoe.
Mayor Meng Foon says it would be up to hapu to produce such monuments, but the council could have a role funding, installing and managing them.
There was also a call for the council to support the renaming of Poverty Bay to Turanganui a Kiwa.
