MP fires up rangatahi interest

Nelson mayor Rachel Reese has chosen a candidate to mentor for this year’s TUIA Maori leadership programme.
The council had been about to drop out of the national mayor’s programme because of a lack of applicants, until local MP Rino Tirikatene stepped in to fire up interest.
The successful candidate is 18-year-old Waiaio Nga Morehu Elkington, who has just moved back to the area after finishing high school in Opotiki.
During the year he and the mayor will attend leadership courses, and he complete a 100-hour community services project.
Mr Elkington says he will look for something fun he could do to help Maori youth escape any of their problems, such as creating murals or other forms of art.
