Race Relations Conciliator Dame Susan Devoy wants to see te reo Maori made compulsory in schools.
Speaking on TV3’s The Nation show yesterday about Race Relations Day, she urged New Zealanders to make more effort to pronounce Maori words correctly.
She says young people have already normalised te reo, but there is still a reluctance among many older people to accept the language.
Dame Susan says being bilingual would be a real advantage to New Zealand’s young people.
