Opportunities for Maori in Pacific fisheries

The head of the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Association would like to see young Maori coming to work in the region’s fisheries.
Honiara-based James Movick is in Auckland taking part in talks to renew the access agreement for the United States tuna purse seining fleet.
He’s looking forward to next week’s Maori Fisheries Conference where he can explore ways to share knowledge and resources.
Mr Movick says Maori have done well to increase the value of their fisheries settlement assets, as well as channelling benefits back to their communities.
James Movick says fisheries are now an important source of revenue for many island governments.
