Clay history on show
The long history of Maori clay art is being celebrated at a new exhibition at Objectspace in Auckland
Uki Rere features the work of Colleen Urlich, Manos Nathan, Baye Riddell, Wi Taepa and Paerau Corneal.
Urlich says as well as finding contemporary forms for their work, the artists in the Nga Kaihanga Uku collective have explored the Polynesian roots of pottery back to the Lapita people.
She says past views that Maori did not fire their pots is wrong.
Uki Rere: Nga Kaihanga Uku and Beyond runs at Objectspace in Ponsonby Rd until April 11.
