Panguru migration book challenges orthodoxy

A new book on Maori urban migration has challenged the view it was a one-way move resulting in cultural dislocation.
Panguru and the City: Kainga Tahi, Kainga Rua recounts stories of the migration from Hokianga to Auckland.
Historian Dr Melissa Matutina Williams says she tried to let the community tell the story of how they established themselves in workplaces, churches and schools and built dynamic community networks across Auckland.
It also looks at the challenges they faced, including the survival of their culture and identity; and the socio-economic issues, such as housing and unemployment, which shaped the way they approached migration.
Dr Williams says for Panguru people urban migration was a huge social shift, but it was also part of a wider life cycle, with come eventually moving back to where they were born.
