Mayoral mentoring showing results
Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene has praised a mayoral mentoring scheme for passing on valuable skills the next generation of young Maori leaders.
Mr Tirikatene stepped in after the Nelson council was unable to attract any interest in the scheme, and he says after shaking up his networks some outstanding candidates have come forward.
The scheme has been running for several years under the Mayors Taskforce For Jobs with and the Tuia Charitable Trust.
It offers young Maori a chance to be mentored by a mayor, attend wananga together, and engage in projects in their communities which will allow them to develop and demonstrate leadership skills.
Mr Tirikatene says the results can be seen around the country where the scheme is in operation.
"If you go to every major Maori hui around the country these days there will be a group of young leaders there. We need to encourage that. I see them in the south whenever I am going round our hui and the like and we need that. It’s always about encouraging and bringing through the next generation of leaders and the TUIA programme is an excellent way of doing that," he says.
