Hapu want harbour clean up

Tauranga hapu Ngai Tukairangi and Ngati Tapu want to protect the city’s remaining green areas and clean up its harbour.
The hapu this week shared its management plan with Taurangi City Council.
Plan author Kia Mai Ellis says the hapu communities want to become active guardians of the environment and improve horticultural and agricultural training for young people.
They want to control mangroves and stop sediment polluting the harbour.
They also want more say in dealing with issues such as noise and chemical pollution.
The hapu will seek a formal agreement with the Department of Conservation to manage two islands off Mount Maunganui, Moturiki (or Leisure Island) and Motuotau (Rabbit Island).
The plan also called for Matapihi to keep its rural character and not be included inside Tauranga's urban boundary.
