Advisory group FOMA heavy

The Iwi Leaders Group is questioning the number of representatives from the Federation of Maori Authorities on the group advising Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell on the rewrite of Maori land law.
Spokesperson Willie Te Aho says in the main FOMA members are well run, and they are not among the groups of owners the reforms are supposed to help. He says the federation will only help little underperforming Maori land blocks if there is money in it for them.
The group includes FOMA chair Traci Houpapa and former chair Kingi Smiler.
It also includes Mr Te Aho’s wide Linda Te Aho, who has been working on the bill on behalf of the Iwi Leaders Group.
Mr Te Aho says iwi organisations are better placed to work with Maori land owners given the iwi settlements, iwi training and iwi whanau ora programmes which focus on the people.
He says the reforms need to be more about the development of the people than the development of Maori land.
