Mana's Northland candidate Reuben Taipari gate crashed a consultation meeting between Statoil and kaitiaki representatives in Kaitaia.
Te Rarawa chair Haami Piripi says the 30 kaitiaki don't necessarily support the Norwegian company's plans to look for oil off the Northland west coast, but they do want to consider the implications for iwi of the six-year exploration permit.
He says the invite went out to every hapu and marae in the region.
Mr Taipari says he was upset Te Runanga o Te Rarawa was hosting a secret meeting with the oil company, rather than havign an open consultation with affected iwi members.
