Former Taranaki Greypower president Hugh Johnson has delivered a 4000-signature petition to New Plymouth Mayor Andrew Judd demanding a referendum on the council’s plan to introduce a Maori ward.
If 2700 of the names are valid, or 5 percent of eligible voters, a binding referendum is triggered automatically.
The vote is likely to be taken in May.
