Kapa haka visionary Tama Huata passes away

Maori performing arts visionary Tama Huata of Ngati Kahungunu has died in Hastings after a long illness.
Building on the work of his father Canon Wi Huata and uncle Ossie Huata, Mr Huata started the Kahurangi Dance Theatre and Takitimu Performing Arts School in 1983, teaching hundreds of students in kapa haka and forming troupes which take Maori culture to the world.
He also chaired Te Matatini and started the Waiata Maori Music Awards.
Mr Huata will be taken to Waipatu Marae in Hastings tomorrow, and his funeral will be at Mihiroa Marae in Pakipaki on Sunday.
