Iwi government short step from local government

Green MP Denise Roche says people shouldn’t feel alarmed at the prospect of iwi exercising some form of sovereignty.
Labour leader Andrew Little has raised a storm with his call at Waitangi for iwi to be given some degree of self-governance, in line with the promises made in the Treaty of Waitangi.
Ms Roche says New Zealand already has devolved sovereignty.
"We already have a model where there are lawmaking in different regions. It's called local government. So there is no reason why we can't be dicussing this situation where iwi can be looking at their laws, basically their rules in their own rohe," she says.
Denise Roche says the response to Andrew Little’s comments highlights the need for more treaty education for all New Zealanders.
