Te Hiku streaming Waitangi to web
Kaitaia-based Te Hiku Media will be putting a Maori persective out to the world on commemorations for the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
It will live stream to the web video of the next two days of events around the Treaty Grounds and lower marae.
The Te Hiku TV crew will be helped by a team from Channel North, which will broadcast the live stream over Freeview in the Whangarei region.
Technical expert Keoni Mahelona says Te Hiku tested its live stream last year when the Hawaiian voyaging waka Hokulea was welcomed to the Bay of Islands.
He says the internet and smartphones allow even small organisations like Te Hiku to take on such ambitious projects.
" You know in the old days you had to buy these big beefy cameras and then you had to buy all these other devices if you wanted to hook it up to a video switcher. But I mean with techonolgy today you can broadcast live straight from your iphone to the web. So we are using iphones out in the field for a mobile live coverage and beaming that back to our little tents. We will be based at the treaty grounds and from there we will have coverage coming in from different places. Seeing what is important and what is relevant and having our anchors discuss that on the tv and then stream that to the web and to the world " he says.
Te Hiku’s Waitangi cover can be seen on most mobile devices and computers worldwide at waitangi.tv or by visiting tehiku.nz
