Waitangi prepares for visitor influx
The Waitangi National Trust is expecting between 30,000 and 40,000 people who will make their way to the Treaty Grounds and surrounding area for Friday’s commemoration of the 175th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi.
Public programmes manager Mori Rapana says protest is just a small part of Waitangi, and most visitors see the occasion as a great day out for the whanau.
He says there is a huge programme from the 4th to the 7th, including navy frigates, an air force flyover, kapa haka including Te Matatini champions Te Waka Huia, and other entertainment.
" We’ve got a concert up here on the 5th, which starts with the navy, beat the retreat, followed by Tina Cross, JGeeks, Rob Ruha and all the other artists. And then on the 6th we have got the dawn ceremony which happens in the whare runanga, followed by the inter-denominational church service at 9-10.30. And then from 11 o'clock is all the entertainment up here on the treaty grounds, There is heaps of room up, here heaps of room. I invite everyone to come up and have a bit of a titiro " says Mori Rapana
