Mayor pays tribute to Makaurau stalwart
Whanau at Makaurau Marae have farewelled Maryanne Rapata Tuwha, who died of cancer last week at the age of 55.
Among the mourners was Auckland Mayor Len Brown, who says while marae are known for the speakers out front, the action is often driven by those behind.
" Maryanne, man, relentless. A great woman, a real powerhouse out there at Makaurau. Formidable, particularly in meetings dealing with the details of how we go forward. Makaurau like most marae and iwi around Tamaki Makaurau now are settled or about to settle their claims. Have assets and are looking long and hard at the future as to how to maximise those assets and Maryanne was firmly focused on that. Now she died too young " says Mayor Len Brown
