Arson destroys Mangatawa HQ

The chair of Mangatawa Papamoa Blocks says a fire that extensively damaged the incorporation’s administration centre on the southern edge of Tauranga could be linked to s string of arsons in the area.
Police are treating Tuesday’s fire as suspicious and say they have a number of suspects.
Mike Haua says a nearby disused hall and a motorway bridge at Papamoa have also been torched in recent months.
He says Mangatawa Papamoa has been swamped with offers of alternative space, but will probably set up temporary offices in another building it owns before while it waits to build a new headquarters.
The building was about 200 metres from Tamapahore Marae, and Fire Service national Maori advisor Piki Thomas says it’s a timely reminder of the need for marae to have proper sprinkler systems and fire protection in place.
