Ngati Porou lands Sealord catch

Sealord has started to unload some of its catch at Gisborne for processing.
Ngati Porou Seafood Chief Executive Mark Ngata says in the past the fish was taken back to Nelson, but through his company’s partnership with Sealord, fish harvested from Gisborne and East Coast waters will be processed in the town.
The deepwater trawler Otakou unloaded a catch of mostly hoki and orange roughy last week.
Ngati Porou’s deepwater quota is fished by Sealord, New Zealand’s second largest fishing company which is half owned by Maori and half by Japanese company Nissui.
The company has cut more than 100 jobs at its Nelson fish processing plant, which will in future concentrate on processing fresh fish for Australasia and frozen whole fish for the China market rather than frozen commodity products.
