New kohanga for Rangitane

Rangitane opens kohanga reo
Rangitane members hope the opening of a new kohanga reo this month will help preserve the Manawatu tribe’s dialect.
Ngati Hineaute has turned its offices in the Highbury shopping centre into an early childhood facility, with the 20 places now taken.
Hapu trust chief executive Lorene Fitzgerald says it’s Rangitane’s first kohange reo, and involves the iwi’s five hapu.
"Part of our vision was to revitalise and restore our reo, but more important our mita, or the dialect of Rangitane."
She says it is more than 15 years since a kohanga has been accessible to families in the area.
The centre was offering te reo classes for family members to brush up.
