61 journalists were killed in 2014, 17 of them killed by Israel alongside 500 children in Gaza last summer, there wasn't much 'Je Suis Palestinian' then so the outrage and sudden defence of freedom of speech by leaders who have arrested, detained, punished and killed journalists seems more hypercritical than principled.
The crass offensiveness and anti-Islamic nature of some of Charlie Hebdo's certainly didn't deserve such horrific violence, but the debate over the freedom the majority culture has to denigrate the minority is worth having.
The NZ Press Council rushed to defend Nisbet's right to offend, yet when cartoonist Malcolm Evans made reference in the NZ Herald that Israel was a the new apartheid state with the building of their wall, the NZ Press Council not only supported the Herald's right to sack Evans, they also supported the Herald's right to censor any Letters to the Editor that criticised the Herald for their decision to sack him.
