Shane Jones, whose past jobs include chairing the Maori fisheries settlement trust Te Ohu Kaimoana and being a Labour MP, hooked the 305.9 kg blue marlin off Cape Brett last Thursday with a lure on a 37kg line.

El Donna skipper AJ Barton-Barry says it’s probably the biggest fish caught in New Zealand this year.

It surpasses the 256.2kg marlin hauled in off Whangamumu by Trudy Wells on January 2, reported to Sport Fishing New Zealand.

The New Zealand record is a 483.4kg fish caught off North Cape by Whangarei builder Ross Jameson in 2009.

Mr Jones says the fish will be smoked and distributed, with some destined for the visitors to this year’s Waitangi Day commemorations.

He says sport fishing is a way to get extra value out of fisheries not just in New Zealand but throughout the Pacific, with various countries looking for ways to attract fishers.
