Merger secrecy fuels Maori distrust
Hutt Valley Maori health providers are backing a call by doctors to stop the merger of health services in the Wellington region.
Noelene Smiler from the Hutt Valley Maori Health Service Development group says there is a low level of trust in the leadership of either Capital Coast or Hutt Valley District Health Boards, who seem to operate the change process by stealth.
She says one consequence of the proposed merger seems to be an unprecedented deficit at Hutt Vallery DHB, which it is trying to fix by slashing funds for Maori providers under the guise of a review.
Ms Smiler says there is supposed to be a single Maori manager across the region’s three DHBs, but the position is vacant.
