The Ministry for Culture and Heritage is celebrating the publication of a book it partly funded through its annual New Zealand History Research Trust Fund Publisher Grants.

Tangata Whenua: An Illustrated History by Atholl Anderson, Aroha Harris and the late Judith Binney tracks Maori from the migration out of China 5000 years ago through to their settlement of Aotearoa and beyond.

Ripeka Evans, the ministry’s Pou Arahi Whakahaere, says the seven-year project also involved ministry staff who provided historical knowledge and read manuscript drafts.

She says the authors have drawn from history, archaeology, traditional narratives and oral histories to ground the story in specific localities throughout New Zealand.

Tangata Whenua was published by Bridget Williams Books.
