Flavell brings kitchen cabinet to reo bill
Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell has included several prominent academics in the group that will give him independent advice on the Te Matawai strategy proposed by his predecessor Pita Sharples.
Mr Flavell says he wholeheartedly supports the intention of Te Reo Maori Bill to ensure iwi and Maori lead the revival of te reo Maori but he wants to make sure the bill as workable as it can be.
The bill will replace the existing Maori Language Act and create a new iwi-driven body, Te Matawai, that will oversee agencies like the Maori language commission, Te Mangai Paho and Maori Television.
The Maori Language Advisory Group will include Professor Wharehuia Milroy, Charisma Rangipunga from Ngai Tahu’s Toitu Te Kura regional economic development unit, Dr Ruakere Hond from Taranaki, Dr Rawinia Higgins, the head of Victoria University’s Te Kawa a Maui school of Maori studies, and Charlie Te Pana from Ngati Raukawa.
Mr Flavell says they represent key strands in te reo Maori revitalisation including understanding language law, language planning, an academic understanding of te reo and involvement with community language initiatives.
