Maori Party wants more changes to spy bill
Maori Party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell says warrantless searches can’t be justified under any circumstances.
The party plans to buck the Government over the Countering Terrorism Bill when it is presented to Parliament again next week.
At the select committee stage Labour managed to negotiate the time the Security Intelligence Service could conduct warrantless searches or surveillance from 48 to 24 hours.
Mr Flavell says his constituents have told him they don’t trust the authorities with such extraordinary search powers.
They are also concerned about the ability of the state to cancel people’s passports.
