Muslims are the new Maori
Muslims are the new Maori
MARTYN BRADBURY
Many Maori will be familiar with the terrorism dog whistle the Government are currently blowing in their attempt to rush through under urgency new terrorism laws.
In the past, 'radical' Maori have been the target of the Government's public fear mongering when wanting to justify surveillance and police actions, today it is the Muslims who are the bogeyman National are trying to use Muslims as an excuse for wide ranging powers that give the Secret Intelligence Service the power to break into our homes, plant spy cameras and film us without a warrant for 48 hours.
This from the very same spy agency who were revealed last week in the Inspector General's report to have helped the PM's Office falsify SIS information to smear Phil Goff months before an election.
If the SIS can't use the current powers they have properly, why on earth are they being granted invasive new spying powers that allow them to break into our homes?
No actual explanation of why the SIS need these new powers has actually been forwarded, the Prime Minister mumbles something about foreign Muslim fighters and apparently that's the end of the conversation. Ramming these laws through when there hasn't been a case made for them should concern us all.
What is most revealing are the comments by Chris Finlayson on TV3s The Nation when he admitted that these spying powers wouldn't be limited to religious groups, meaning the entire public rational for these new powers is nothing but a national security pretence.
If Muslims are being radicalised in NZ, then that is a failing of society to reach out to those on the fringes and make them feel included. Radicalisation isn't something that happens in a vacuum, it is caused by oppressive forces that generate righteous anger, if we want to make NZ safe from terrorism, then we should stop supporting the regimes who create that grievance.
Removing the passports of NZers traveling to these conflict zones isn't an answer, demanding those regional powers who are currently propping up and funding these radical movements and the external powers who are driving the conflict is.
