Poor pilloried in state house sell off
Labour’s housing spokesperson Phil Twyford says National is demonising state house tenants as a way to soften up the public for its socially-destructive housing policy.
Mr Twyford says plans to sell up to a quarter of Housing New Zealand’s housing stock is clearly seen by the public as privatisation, despite the Government’s attempt to call it something else.
He says National is operating a double standard.
"The welfare state and state housing from the 1960's, where John Key grew up in a state house, somehow thats ok, that's a good thing. But now National regards state house tenants as the undeserving poor, basically reagrds them as a whole lot of ratbags who are gaming the system and I just don't think that stacks up," he says.
Mr Twyford says state housing is a way to ensure all children can get a good start in life irrespective of whether their parents have money.
