Paki waits on appeal decision
A High Court judge has reserved his decision on whether to overturn a district court decision not to convict the son of the Maori king for a drink driving offence.
At the court in Auckland today, Crown lawyer Mathew Downs told Justice Mark Woolford that Korotangi Paki’s offending was at least moderately serious and warranted a conviction.
Mr Paki’s lawyer Paul Wicks QC said the then-18 year old was stopped in a routine traffic stop rather than for poor driving.
He said any conviction would have excessive consequences, including ruling him out as a potential heir to the throne.
