Sharples active patron of Maori research
Former Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples says he’s proud to be the new patron of Maori research centre Nga Pae o Te Maramatanga.
Dr Sharples joins the organisation as it strives to pick up the funding set aside in the budget for a Maori centre of research excellence.
Nga Pae chair Sir Tipene O’Regan says he will have an important role in optimising the centre’s contribution to research, including the Maori language and Maori economic strategies he designed as minister.
Dr Sharples, who was one of the first Maori to earn a doctorate, says his whole academic career was about ensuring Maori knowledge has the same respect as other viewpoints.
"We have that and we’ve grown it with Nga Pae and those involved and we have excellent scholarships from the research that has been funded, quite considerable projects. We have some new projects lined up now, so it is really looking exciting," he says.
Dr Sharples was part of Nga Pae’s predecessor, Auckland University’s International Indigenous Research group.
