Flavell endorses reo bill

Maori Development Minister Te Ururoa Flavell will set up a small independent advisory group to help him review submissions and advance the Maori Language (Te Reo Maori) Bill.
The bill, which sets up a new entity Te Matawai to oversee agencies involved in the language, was instigated by his predecessor Pita Sharples.
It is seen by many in the sector as a misguided legacy project that will let the crown off its responsibilities to foster and protect te reo Maori.
But Mr Flavell says he supports the principle of the legislation that iwi and Maori should lead the revitalisation of te reo Maori.
He intends to work constructively with those who would like to see some changes to the implementation of Te Matawai.
The Maori Affairs Select Committee has extended submissions on the Bill to December 5.
